Inspired by Frobel’s Gifts, the divided cylinder appears deceptively simple but represents a complex approach to learning and is an extension of the divided cube (gift three). Developed to allow adults to observe through play each child’s unique learning ‘gift’. In Frobel’s educational philosophy of ‘gifts’ the presentation of the ‘gift’ is as a whole, when play is complete it must be returned to its whole form. Incorporating this into our portable play jars ensures this occurs. Another aspect of gift play is that creations are modified, not destroyed and rebuilt thus children learn unity and nature of change.
Portable Play Jars is a concept influenced by a culmination of learning theories. Simply explained, they provide an aesthetically organised and contained learning experience where children are able to decide how and what they want to play with whilst learning the respect and responsibility of returning the resource in the jar complete as they found it for others to use. The sturdy jars are easily transported to their chosen place of play and contain only one type of resource.
