Yongka Kangaroo Track Shakers by SImone Hills - 2pcs

Yongka is the Noongar name for Kangaroo. The artwork on the wood shakers represents the bidi ‘track’ that a Yongka ‘Kangaroo’ leaves on the Boodja ‘ground’ when their feet hit the ground and then flicking the dirt as they bardang ‘jump’. Each shaker is uniquely hand-painted with earthy tones and shades inspired by our Yongkas ‘Kangaroos’.. When I shake them the sound reminds me of Yongkas Bardanginy ‘Kangaroos jumping’ through dry grass… reminding me of Skip coming to follow my brother and I through the dry grass on the farm (Skippy - photo below - was a Joey we had on the farm in Rocky Gully when i was a child) …. . • Koolangka ‘Kids’.... can you imagine Yongka Bardanginy ‘Kangaroo Jumping’ through the grass.. practice taking turns and Waabiny ‘play’ a guessing game.. Ni ‘Listen’.. to the shaker sound and have a guess.. would the Yongka Bardanginy ‘Kangaroo Jumping’ be fast or slow?

These shakers are hand-painted by Emerging Noongar Artist - Simone Hills. Simone Hills  - Karda Artwork is an Artist Member of the Indigenous Art Code. This means as an artist Simone is adding her voice to the call for fair and ethical trade with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, and transparency in the promotion and sale of artwork.
